Flights are the biggest part of a safari price from Zanzibar. This trip replaces them with the fast ferry to Dar es Salaam and the standard-gauge railway (SGR) to Morogoro, where your guide meets you for the last stretch by road.
The first and last days are long, with a ferry, a train and a drive, but the full day in between is all safari, and the price is much lower than flying.
Day by day
Day 1: Ferry, train and Mikumi
Early pick-up for the fast ferry to Dar es Salaam, about two hours. Our driver takes you to the SGR station for the train to Morogoro, where your guide meets you and drives you to Mikumi for an afternoon game drive if time allows.
Day 2: A full day in Mikumi
Morning and afternoon game drives with a picnic lunch in the park.
Day 3: Morning drive and back to Zanzibar
An early drive, then the road to Morogoro, the train to Dar es Salaam and the afternoon ferry to Zanzibar. We meet you at the port and take you to your hotel.
Ferry and train timetables change; we book the times that suit your date and confirm them before you travel. If a ferry or train is cancelled, we go by road instead.

Mikumi by ferry and train: questions
How long does the journey take?
Most of the first and last day: about two hours on the ferry, the train to Morogoro and then the road to Mikumi, plus waiting times. The middle day is all safari.
Is the train comfortable?
The SGR is a modern electric line with air-conditioned carriages. We book the class that suits your budget.
Is the ferry crossing rough?
It can be choppy, especially in the windy months. If you get seasick, take something before you board.
Can we bring big luggage?
Yes, there is no small-plane limit on this trip, but you will carry it on and off the ferry and train, so a soft bag is easier.
