Mikumi is the national park nearest to Zanzibar by air. Its centre is a wide, open floodplain with few trees, so you can see a long way: herds of zebra and buffalo, giraffes browsing at the edges, elephants walking to water, and hippos in the pools.
This is the trip for travellers who want a real safari without giving up a night on the beach. Many guests book it before they leave home; others decide once they are on the island. Both work, as long as there are seats on the plane.
How the day runs
Morning: pick-up and flight
Our driver collects you early from your hotel and takes you to Zanzibar's airport. The small plane flies you to the airstrip inside Mikumi in about an hour; on a clear day you see the coast and the farmland of the mainland below.
Late morning to afternoon: game drive and lunch
Your guide is waiting at the airstrip with the vehicle. You drive across the plains and along the waterholes at your own pace, stopping wherever there is something to watch. Lunch is in the park.
Late afternoon: back to Zanzibar
The guide drops you at the airstrip for the flight back. Our driver meets you at Zanzibar's airport and takes you to your hotel, usually in the early evening.
Take a small day bag only; your main luggage stays at your hotel. Small planes allow about 15 kg of luggage per person, hand luggage included, best in a soft bag; we confirm your airline's limit when we book. Flights can be delayed by weather or air traffic; if that happens, we adjust the day so you lose as little time in the park as possible.

Shared option: $475 per person for any group size, when other travellers book the same date. You share the vehicle and guide with them. If nobody else books, you can take the private trip or choose another date.

Mikumi day trip: questions
How long is the flight to Mikumi?
About an hour each way. The airline sets the exact times, and we send them to you when we confirm the booking.
How long are we in the park?
Most of the day, usually several hours of game drive between landing and take-off. The exact time depends on the flights on your date.
Which animals will we see?
Mikumi is good for elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest, impalas and hippos, and lions are seen fairly often. Wild animals move freely, so no sighting can be promised.
Can we book once we are already on Zanzibar?
Yes, if there are seats on the plane. Send us your dates on WhatsApp and we check straight away. Booking from home gives you the widest choice of dates.
What is the difference between private and shared?
The flights, park fees, game drive and lunch are the same. Private means the vehicle and guide are only for your group; shared means you join other travellers and pay less if you are 1 to 5 people.
